Espada y Daga (Sword and Dagger) is one of the most complicated and sophisticated systems of Kombatan. There are numerous Espada y Daga systems taught including Palis-Palis, Tusok, Cinco Teros and Crossada style.
The strong hand wields the sword or machete and serves as the primary offence. The other hand holds the knife or dagger which is used for both offence thrusting and slashing and defence for blocking, checking and locking. Training starts with combination drills teaching coordination and timing of the two weapons in striking and blocking patterns. The next stage is the footwork and the correct body angling Drills then progress to those involving multiple attacks, usually the longer sword followed by the knife and are practiced on both sides of an attacker. The goal is to develop a free flow of blocks, parries, strikes and footwork combinations from any position or any strike. The last stage involves locks and takedowns. |
